HI ALL,

I'm currently on a 2 year IEC open work permit and its going to expire in late April. I'm in the express entry pool with 469 points, hoping to get an invitation to apply for pr but that's wishful thinking there going to be down to them points by April.
What can i do to continue working or can i extend my work permit? getting worried now.

Depending where you're from you might qualify for another IEC. Otherwise your employer needs to obtain an LMIA so that you can then apply for a closed work permit.

Ireland??

1. Nope, you are only eligible for another one under the International Co-op program. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/temp/work/opinion/experience/bilat.asp

I don't mean to be negative but I think you need to know the reality of your situation. Unfortunately without a LMIA from an employer you will not be able to work in Canada and LMIA's are very hard to get. Your employer has to be able to prove that he has tried to hire a Canadian for the job but was not able to. At this point there may not even be enough time to get the LMIA before your IEC expires. And even if you got the ITA under EE today that still would not leave enough time for you to get the application in and get the AOR so that you could apply for an open work permit with the AOR. Having the ITA is not enough to get another work permit you need to have the AOR.

Remember you can not have implied status when you are on an IEC visa. If anyone tells you that you can they are wrong and you could jeopardize your chances of getting PR if you work after your IEC expires. So do not try to apply for a work permit just before you IEC expires in order to buy yourself more time.

I hate to be the one to tell you but you should have started the application process a long tine ago so that you could have had an AOR number by now. You would have had to apply under PNP (depending on PNP requirements where you are) or CEC (after one year of working in Canada) as soon as you were eligible. If you had chances are you would have been eligible for a work permit either with the PNP certificate or the AOR. Going from an IEC visa to PR is very time sensitive, you need to do things as soon as you can because everything takes so long to process.

If you want to stay in Canada you will need to switch to a visitors visa and stop working before your IEC expires. You will likely have to prove that you have funds to support yourself while you stay in Canada so that the CIC doesn't think you are a risk for working. You could be looking at needing around $10,000 in order to get a one year visitor visa. And really that would likely be how much you would need in order to support yourself while you wait to get PR.

Your best option may be to return to Ireland when your IEC expires and find a job there while you wait to get PR. I know this may not be what you wanted to hear but as I said I think you need to know the reality of your situation. At least once you do get an ITA the process will be fast. Just make sure you have all your documents ready for when you get the ITA so you can apply right away.
