I have to say that I'm concerned about the direction of the US and am exploring the option of moving to Canada. As I am semi-retired and my wife is an artist, what are our chances of having a "Plan B" if things get worse?

If you have children who are Canadians and living in Canada (and who make sufficient income) - they may be able to sponsor you for permanent residency.
Otherwise as stated above, the chances are pretty much nil unfortunately. You'll have to be satisfied with visiting as tourists from time to time.
