I am a permanent resident and work for a Canadian company. I am a millwright and there is a chance that my employer will require me to travel to the USA to provide service work to a company there.

what would be the proper procedures to follow?

thanks,

Normally your employer should handle this, assuming they know of your immigration status. I would check with them first.

You need the correct work authorization or be (rarely) exempt under travel for business admission for after service provision type work. Your employer should have the relevant procedures in place to seek this work authorization. Don't just show up at the border or you will get yourself in a mess...you don't want CBP to confirm their belief you are intending to immigrate/ work without authorization. If you want to do some independent research google is your friend type State Department for the various visa categories and CBP for the border clearance process.
