LANDED..........
April 21 2016
Hi,

We did a soft landing in April 2016, for about 2 weeks and returned to our home country.

We plan to move in July 2018. Our PR cards expire on June 2021.

Does this give us enough time to comply with 730 days ?

Yes because you could stay away almost 3 years and still meet RO as long as you stay 2 years after that without leaving. In your case you need to be back by March 2019 and stay 2 years after that so arriving back July 2018 is plenty of time. Note that the initial 2 out of 5 requirement is based on your landing date not your PR card start/end date so for you March/April 2021.

The expiration of your PR card does not matter. The date that matters is the date you landed in April 2016. from that day on the 5 years start to count.

So let's say you landed on April 1. This means your 5 year period is from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2021.
In this scenario you say you want to come back in July 2018. I'll use July 1 for my calculations.
There are 1004 days between July 1, 2018 and March 31, 2021.

To me it would seem that you would have no problems meeting the obligation. You may even have room for trips outside of Canada.

Of course you should adjust the dates accordingly to your own situation.

Technically, by Nov 12, 2020. But don't let technicalities fool you. Best is to go 3 years before. (Nov 12, 2019) Because this will give you room for trips abroad (which you need for work, holidays, emergencies, etc)

Under the new rules citizenship needs 3 years of residency, so if you go 3-3.5 years before the expiry of your card and keep foreign travel to a minimum you will qualify for citizenship right around the expiry of your card.
