Hi everyone,

I’ve been with the same employer for 4+ years. My current work permit is employer-specific (closed) and LMIA-based (I’ve been on it for about 3 years). I recently applied for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) and I’m still waiting for approval.

I understand that, on an LMIA-based closed work permit, changes to compensation may be limited (especially if they affect the wage on the LMIA / offer of employment).

My question: If my employer keeps my base salary exactly the same, can they pay me a performance bonus (for example, a one-time or annual bonus around 15–20% of my annual salary) as a reward for good work?

Would a performance bonus be considered a change to wages that could violate LMIA / work permit conditions, or is it generally allowed as long as the base wage, job title, duties, and hours remain unchanged?

If anyone has experience with this or can point to official guidance, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you!
