Good day all!

I hope I am asking this question in the right place.

I am a Canadian permanent resident and an Indian Citizen and Indian passport holder. I am planning to travel to India between Dec 28 2016 and Jan 15,2017. My passport is expiring on April17,2017.

Can I travel without renewing my passport?

I emailed BLS in Brampton (BLS handles applications and work with the Consulate General's Office) and got a response that " 6 month validity is needed to travel". I seriously doubt that after doing some online searches.

Hope to hear from some experts, personal experiences on the forum.

Thanks all and I appreciate your help!

You will not be allowed to travel unless your passport has at least 6 month validity from your point of departure. Sure, you can go ahead and book your tickets, make your travel arrangements but when you check in at the airport you will be denied entry to your flight.

Are you sure? Better to check with the airlines whether or not you would be denied entry to your flight.

My Canadian passport is expiring in December, but I was able to return to Canada last month by plane.

Apparently, Canadians can board a flight even on the last day of their passport validity.

I am aware a 6 month minimum validity is required for getting a Visa to many countries including India. However in my case I am just travelling to my home country and coming back. There is a lot of confusion as there is no mention about Passport validity requirement for Indian citizens.

I will check with the airlines but I am more concerned about boarding the flight back to Toronto. The immigration officer in India might create an isssue.

I guess I will have to renew my passport.. Problem is I have already booked my ticket for 28 Dec and I can't move or cancel it and renewal can take upto 2 months.

Thank you Andynd1uk and steaky for your input :)

Another option is to re-issue the passport, current processing time is 3-6 weeks. But, BSL will hold your old passport until all the process is done.

Hi akashtak7,

I am also a Canadian permanent resident, Indian Citizen and Indian passport holder.I am also in same situation like you, I am planning to travel to India on 15-March-2017 and coming back on 15-April-2017, My passport is expiring in 29-June-2017. I checked with BLS India about re-issue of passport which can take 2 months and I don't have that much time to delay my trip to India.

Did you travel to India as you per your plan mentioned in post with Passport expiring in April 2017? Let me know if you face any difficulties in travel with such conditions?
Is it mandatory to have passport with validity of 6 months to travel to India and come back to Canada for Indian passport holders?

Thanks in advance.
