Passport status for Transit visa

I have sent my passport to the New York Consulate for the Transit Visa about 4 days back but i dont see any update on my status. I have my flight in 5 more days. Does it help to go to NY directly ??? and is there any way to contact the embassy directly and inquire regarding the status.

1. No, you won't be admitted to the consulate, the visa is processed and then returned to the VAT.
2. The posted processing time is 49 days, so you are out of luck for a flight in 5 days. http://tinyurl.com/y6b94toe
