Today I went for my first interview to see if I was eligible for refugee status. They seize my passport under subsection 140 (1) and said the will email me the date for the next interview. I am very very worried.

Can someone please advise me if it is a bad thing for that to happen. Thanks much

Hi - seizing the passport is very, very common and here's why they do it. When a person makes a claim to become a Protected Person in Canada there is a report made and a Conditional Removal Order is made. If you become a Protected Person then the removal order loses its meaning and ceases to be effective - it goes away.

However, if a person is determined to not require Canada's protection then the removal order is effective and the seized passport will be an instrument for the person to gain lawful entry into their country of citizenship. It's used to deport the person.

You have every right to worry about all sorts of stuff but don't allow this to bother you. It's normal.

Its normal don't worry. Your next interview will be eligibility where you will sign few papers and your case will be forwarded to IRB if its eligible
