Passport back

Hi,
I'm planning to apply for visitor visa from Canada Seattle Consulate. But i need one clarification. As per CIC website, normal processing time is 30 days. If I apply for visa by 14th Jan and if i didn't get visa within 30 days, Can I get my passport back. I have already book tickets for my home country and would be leaving within 30-32 days.
This is little scary, so would like to confirm before applying for visa.

People have reported issued getting their passports back. If you already have your flight booked and have to leave in 30-32 days - I wouldn't apply for the visitor visa.
