Hello, My spouse is filling up the IMM0008 form and he added me as a dependent with no issues. He then added his parent as dependent too and 3 types of dependents came up (Type ABC) that all address only the children. What should be the Type here? Thanks

Your dependants are a spouse or children under 22. If you don’t have children under 22 then it is blank.

Parents are not dependents.

Thanks. I do wish this section didn't have 'parent' as one of the options in the drop down. Would have made things simpler!

1. Parents are not dependents, only spouses and children. Parents are shown on the IMM 5406

Thank you. Will fill up 5406 for sure. I think it is a cultural thing- took quite some time for it to get into my head that I can't add my elderly retired parent as a dependent. I had all the facts in hand and still I was not able to grasp it

Not sure what you are applying for (assume business immigration since posting in this forum) but your parents don‘t immigrate or move with you. If they require assistance with day to day care then make sure it is set up for them before you come to Canada.

Yes, that will be a major concern for us. It will hard to plan anything if folks do not well. Thanks

Because typically in North America , children move on with their lives , the parents have done their bit and it’s done .
My parents are not my dependents. Years ago the Eskimo’s up north ,when the situation was dire , used to put their elderly on ice floes , just send them off ……..
Of course times have changed , but you get the drift

There may be an opportunity for you to sponsor them later, but only once you've lived and worked in Canada for three years and meet the minimum income requirements. There are limited spots available for parent sponsorship and the current process is to give those spots out through a lottery. Assuming you eventually qualify and are picked, your parents will need to pass a medical in order to be approved and this will include assessing if they have any significant health conditions that may pose a burden to the Canadian health care system. So definitely possible to sponsor them later and that's what it involves. Hope that helps.
