Hi all,

Question regarding the minimum income requirements for sponsoring your parents. I looked at the CIC website but still a bit confused. My family consists of me and my daughter (1.5 yrs old), and I would like to sponsor both my parents. Would I need an income of $38,272 for 2 people (me and my daghter) or an income of $57,125 for 4 people (my daughter, parents and myself)?
In either case, because my maternity leave fell half on one year and half on the other tax year, meaning my Nottice of Assesment has lower earnings for 2014 and 2015 due to me being on maternity leave. My employment income is higher than $38k but lower than $57k. My guess is that I am doomed for the next few years before I can sponsor my parents. While there is no rush for my parents to immigrate here, considering that they have a very comfortable life backhome, I would want them to come live here as soon as possible since I do not have any family here.

Based on your post you need to meet the income requirement for 4 people. If your parents have any dependents not mentioned in your post they also must be included whether accompanying or not.

Your family size is 4. So yes the 2014 qualifying LICO was 57,125.

Unfortunately there are no exceptions to the LICO qualifying, if you don't meet it, you won't qualify in that year. So if you won't start qualifying until 2016, then with 2016/2017/2018 tax returns you can possibly apply to sponsor your parents in January 2020 assuming rules stay the same.

Note the LICO increases every year, so I would expect the 2016 LICO for family size of 4 to be around $59-60K.

Of course if you happen to live in Quebec, they are still going by the old income rules so in that case you would only need 1 year of qualifying income before you can sponsor.
