Outland (living in Canada) sponsor app. transferred to our country VO. Good or bad things to expect?

My application to sponsor my wife (with 2 dependents, both are our children) received an update after half year idling. The update said our application will be transferred to our home country Ho Chi Minh City Consulate General of Canada, Visa Section. This is not a global VO, only for applications from Vietnam.

Here is our timeline.
Submitted: Sep 2025
AOR: Oct 2025
Sponsor Eligible: Nov 2025 from CPC Mississauga
BIL & MIL: Dec 2025
Applicant Eligibility changed from Not Started to In Progress on Jan 2026 (few days before tracker down)
Open Work Permit approved Jan 2026.
No update since then.
GCMS note received July 2026, nothing special.

Until few days ago I received an update on GCKey saying the application is being transferred.

Not sure what to expect here. Is that a normal procedure for outland? Or they need to look further at something?

Hey,

Transfers aren't necessarily bad. For outland applications, it's actually pretty common for files to get moved from CPC Mississauga to the local visa office in the applicant's home country for final processing. Mississauga usually handles eligibility and sponsor approval, then sends it to the local VO for the rest.

Ho Chi Minh City is the designated office for Vietnam, so this makes sense. It doesn't automatically mean they found something concerning.

A few thoughts:

• Timing is normal – half-year idle then transfer is pretty typical.
• GCMS notes being clean is a good sign.
• Eligibility already in progress before the transfer is positive.

Could be they just need local knowledge for docs or just standard workload balancing. I'd see it as progress — at least something moved.

Keep an eye on the tracker for Eligibility to flip to Completed. That's usually the big one.

Yes, I did assume that. I believe my application is non-routine, while most Sep 2026 outland applications reached the decision months ago, my application stayed still since January until this transfer notice. Also that's why I asked whether it is normal to be transferred to local VO for an outland application, just to prepare ourselves what to expect.

Most sponsorship applications aren’t processed in 6 months. You appear to have some significant issue with your application so tough to predict how long it will take to receive an answer about your application.
