Just wondering....

I got married in December 2012 and have yet to change the name on my passport. On the application do I put my maiden name or my married last name? My driver's license already has my married name on it....

It's a familiar situation for CIC. A lot of women don't change their name on their passports until it's time to actually renew the passport. The name you give is the one that appears on your PR card, so I imagine you prob want your married name there. As long as they can see your marriage certificate with both names, it's fine. You could include a copy of the DL and an additional page explaining that you now go by your married name but haven't changed your passport yet.

Are you the applicant or the sponsor?

Depending on your province, it's completely legal to have ID in married OR maiden name.

Don't stress about it. My only advice is in the "alias" section you list whichever you didn't put as your legal name at the top of the form.

Then you don't need to submit your passport anyway. You can use your driver's license for picture just fine.

My husband only used his license and birth certificate. He was approved.

I put my maiden name as it matches my passport. I believe the forms say to use what matches official travel documents. My passport hasn't been renewed yet. My DL is in my married name. I included copies of everything. I had to include my passport as it has visas to show visits to my husband. Since I signed my forms with my married name I included my DL just to confirm it.

amikety is correct as you are the sponsor. I am in your situation as well and because I just got my passport renewed shortly before we got married and I do not want to give CIC any opportunities to mess up our application :), I am leaving my passport as is. MadeinCanada is also correct is saying they want the info. in the applications to match the travel/passport docs.

I simply added my hubby's last name (no hyphen) to my driver's license, OHIP card (my province's health card) and my SKYPE name. That way if we have to send any supplementary info. they can see I am using my married name on future docs and our SKYPE chat logs. When the time comes to renew passport in 5 years, I will change that then and if needed will just carry a copy of marriage certificate when travelling.

I got married in Janaury, and haven't changed my last name yet. I left it because I thought it would be less hassle for the sponsorship process...

Your reasoning with the way CIC operates is logical; however, if you are the sponsor you can change some of your other ID if you want and just leave passport intact for now. It's what works best for each couple along with minimizing any changes/updates we need to initiate to CIC. :)

I did the same thing. I'll change my name when I land! My husband can't wait for that day - that being one of the biggest reasons! :)

I am the sponsor and have not changed my id to married name as passport was only newly renewed when we married. Now it is expiring this summer, does it matter if i change it to married name even if i have forms and copies in maiden name?

I would make sure that you keep copies of the old one(as you said you have). I can't see it being a problem. If it needs to be renewed of course you would update your name. The VO would surely understand that. You can send your VO copies of the new one, and an explanation. As the sponsor I am not sure how much it really matters, although it will show extra proof to your relationship.

I do not have to renew mine for another year, I can only hope and pray that CIC will be a bad memory by then! (fingers crossed)

Take care
