Hello, I need to get some information because I want to start my new life since my husband passed away and I would like to fulfill the dream he always had of us opening a restaurant. I've been thinking a lot about what his dreams were. I figure this forum would be a good place for me to write out my ideas and get feedback. I have a plan and I'm gonna follow that. First of all, I need to complete all the legal formalities of starting a business. Luckily we have a relative who is a legal adviser. Then I need to plan to buy equipment and furniture for the restaurant. I need a commercial refrigerator and novelty freezer for the shop. Due to some financial crunch, I'm planning to buy a branded refurbished one. Did anyone had tried it before for your restaurant and share your experience. Finally, I need a chef who has relevant experience in the field.

Sorry for your loss. So you are living and Canada and want to open a restaurant. Seek the guidance of your local, provincial business centre. They can provide advice for you on your new venture.

Hi, Thank you so much for your suggestion. I think seeking the guidance of the provincial business center is one of the suitable solutions for it. When I search about it on the internet and I found many branded equipment stores providing used equipment for restaurants and hotels. I don't know whether they are selling a quality product but I have bookmarked one of them to inquire more about it. I saw many positive reviews on ice cream freezer and other equipment so I think it's a suitable option. Did anyone try it before? After getting more reviews from people I'm gonna contact them.

Would suggest working in a restaurant and getting a feel for the industry and how to run a restaurant properly before opening up your own restaurant.

I would suggest buying a franchise!
they will charge you some money but they will supply you with all you need. they will even download the software and train you and your employees.
if you don't have any experience in this field it's very risky to start things by yourself.
a Frneshisor has been doing this for so many years and will guide you!

There are good franchise partners and bad franchise partners. Some are actually there to support you and put in time and effort in order for your business to be successful but others are only interested in receiving money from you with as little effort on their part. Owning a franchise can either go well or be an absolute nightmare where you are charged a huge fee for branded products with zero flexibility to run your business. Would do a huge amount of research before buying a franchise. Margins in the restaurant business are small and having to pay the franchise company money leaves a lot less money for your family so it only makes sense if your franchise will be extremely successful.

Hi, I'm so sorry about your loss. I work in commercial property management and I can tell you that there are many properties where a business shuts down and restaurant fixtures are left behind as many leases stipulate that leasehold improvements stay. So, find an agent such as Cushman & Wakefield, CBRE, Colliers etc. to help you find a space. They get their commission from the owners of the property. You can speak to an agent and tell them you are seeking space for a restaurant and they will actively look for restaurant type spaces either empty or partially/fully furnished. Good luck!

Don't do it. Fulfilling someone elses dream without any background and hospitality knowledge is going to end in tears and financial stress. 15 hour days, 7 days a week. Competition is fierce. Welcome to owning a restaurant..

Agree that this is a very tough industry. I would suggest starting very small and getting a feel for the industry first. Maybe doing some catering and renting out a commissary kitchen or selling products at a farmer's market first. Even with a lot of experience restaurants go out of business easily. Would really suggest getting experience first before investing your money into a restaurant.

Years ago, I went too school to become a chef. Like a real chef, not working at Earls , moxies etc .
One of the courses was finances / accounting in opening a restaurant. I highly recommend you finding a accounting /finance course that’s GEARED towards the restaurant business. Competition is fierce, and profit margins are extremely, like extremely narrow. This is why many restaurants open, then close within a very short time frame . Dreams are nice , but reality ain’t no dream .
Good luck

I sympathize with you very much. I wish you luck in your endeavor! What type of restaurant do you intend to open? Restaurants dedicated to certain cuisines and themed styles are in demand. For example, I like to visit such, they have an unbelievable atmosphere than in the usual classic ones. As an idea for inspiration, I can suggest this option https://tapatoro.restaurant/restaurants-near-convention-center/. Even if you plan to furnish a small space, with the help of a qualified design approach you can make the restaurant cozy for visitors.

Very nice of you to want to fulfill your husband's dreams! Your steps to start a business are correct. You will also need a specialist to do a marketing strategy to promote your restaurant to become successful and profitable. But for that, you need to choose what food you will make. I would recommend you think outside the box and choose special food you do not find in other restaurants. You don't often find restaurants with German food in Canada, but German food is very tasty. It would be a great idea for you to bring German regional food to Canada. I loved the food at riwa-restaurant.de, and their menu can inspire you. I think this is a very good idea.
Try this in Vancouver:
