Hello,

My fiance and I are getting married on October 25 and have his PR application all ready to go. However, we are unsure about the Open Work Permit. Do we send this with the PR application? How long does this generally take for approval?

Any insight would be very helpful.

Thank-you!

The open work permit is only for inland PR applications. Generally the inland route isn't advisable, as it typically takes much, much longer than applying through the outland route, and there's no right of appeal.

If you are deciding to apply inland for some reason, you complete this application package and send it together with the PR application to Vegreville in the same envelope, include the extra $150 fee, tick initial work permit, and write on it that it's for an open work permit to be processed after first stage approval is reached on your PR application.

Thank-you for the reply matthewc.

What is the different in application time between the Inland and Outland?

From what I understood, we would be past Stage 1 in approx 8 months, and therefore my fiance would be able to work once the owp is approved. Our goal is to get additional income as quickly as possible. What happens in Stage 2?

Thx

"First stage approval" on an inland app means they believe the relationship is genuine and an interview is not necessary.

Most outland applications are processed to completion faster than inland applications reach first stage approval. If working is your main priority, inland is the wrong choice.

To add to Matthews post if your husband is already with you in Canada even with doing an outland application he can extend his stay as a visitor and remain with you as well. Where is your hubby from?

Outland is better in most cases, however, I am really not thrilled with the idea of sending my wife to Moscow, where she has no family, to attend an interview. She would likely have to wait there while they finish processing her application.

Personally, I'd rather keep my wife with me in Canada, and save a few thousand dollars in travel costs to send her to Moscow if an interview is called. On average, if your application is perfect, and you have legal status in Canada, the wait is only marginally longer. Unfortunately, the data for processing time is skewed by large numbers of people who apply with illegal status.

Submit your work permit with your inland application. Put it in a seperate envelope with a note to process the WP application after AIP.
