Hi All,

I am a foreign worker in Canada, and I went in to get my purple card ID. I was asked for my US drivers license in order to do so which was mandatory in order to get a drivers license or ID. Has anyone had experience in this? I'd like to keep my US drivers license for when I visit and go back home and have an ID in Canada for opening a bank account and such.

Is there an exchange of information back to the states if I give up my drivers license, get the purple ID, go back down and say I lost my license to get a new one?

I can only quote my example from the UK. My British licence was returned to the UK after exchange and my UK licence record now clearly states that I am not eligible for a UK licence as another licence has been issued under a different administration. Assume that the same procedure applies to the USA.

the id's are used to determine residency. you can't technically be a resident of 2 places at the same time. if you exchange your id from the US to get a canadian one, Service ontario will notify the state you're licensed in and it will be cancelled due to no longer being a resident. if you go to the us claiming you lost your license, there's a chance their records will show it was cancelled due to new residency somewhere else, and i suspect you'll need to prove your current residency in that state to get a new license either way. it's up to you if you want to claim residency in 2 countries at the same time. there's no gurantee trying to claim a lost US ID will not result in cancellation of the ontario one.

License is an exchange. It means you give the one you have and get something else in return. If you want to have both, you can keep your US license but don't exchange it for a Canadian one. Start your driving afresh in Canada.

My foreign license was handed back to me when I applied for an Ontario license, but in my case, there was no license exchange, I was only allowed credit of over 2 years of driving experience. They only kept the experience letter and checked my license.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I had planned to bring my car up here, however if I forfeit my US license, my car insurance goes along with it. If I transfer my car here, I'll have to pay a high amount of duty. So, I'm not really sure how to proceed in this predicament. I would get an Ontario license, but it will be a hefty price to pay. Has anyone had this situation before?

Is selling the American registered car and buying a Canadian registered car a cheaper option?

I would recommend calling the RIV and asking them about the "temporary vehicle import" process and if it requires you to pay duty. it is quite possible duties are waved on a temporary vehicle import. When settlers and PRs declare their cars on the BSF186 form when they resettle or land, the duties are waived on the import process. RIV agents are very knowledgeable and helpful, in my experience.
