Health is a provincial matter. It is NOT FEDERAL. Thus, if you change provinces, u'll have to AGAIN get that province's Health Card. And again the waiting period* shall apply. Off course, a previous province's health card remains valid for few days/months in another province, but not all benefits could be availed.

*The Waiting Period:
Alberta [eg. Calgary, Edmonton etc] & Manitoba [eg. Winnipeg] are the Only provinces where there is NO WAITING period for the Health Insurance. Rest in all provinces there is some waiting time to get the Health Benifits. In Ontario [eg. Toronto, Ottawa etc.] it is 3 months.

You can apply immediately, however, u need an address proof (bank statement / Canadian license/ home agreement. You will receive ur card 1-2 days before the start of the health insurance.

In case if want to stay in Ontario, ur health insurance will only start from the 3rd month after landing.

All the best,

AiR :-)

Actually - OHIP coverage starts after you have three months of physical residency (not three months after landing). For example, if you land in Canada, spend a month there and then leave for six months - you'll have to spend three months in Canada when you return before you'll qualify for OHIP.

Yes - you need three months of PHYSICAL residency.

Air, please help

You cannot apply until after the 90days waiting period. I landed in Ontario and went to the City Hall here in Ottawa and was told I could not apply until after my 90days was up from date of landing and she gave me a form to complete for when I returned which included providing them with copy of tenancy agreement covering at least 6months, bank statements, immigration papers or PR Card. I doubt you will be able to apply until you have shown evidence of having resided here over three months.

But many ppl have applied immidiately after landing if see in the same thread, Air1220 has applied one month after landing and they say you will get it after three months, dont whats correct.

This is wrong, You can apply for Ohip when you land but there is a waiting period of 3 months as others have mentioned. I applied for Ohip the next day of landing and got my card 3 months later.

Hi,

You may need to gather the listed documents before u apply. If you don't want to sign a home agreement, open a bank account and request a statement immediately. It will take one month to get the bank statement (not the credit card statement). You have to give a local address to get the bank statement.

Once you have the statement, you can apply for the health card immediately.

Thanks,

AiR :-)

Ditto...

You can apply immediately but will only cover you from the 3rd month...

Usually banks statements are issued after one month, so please tell me what do you mean by requesting the statement immediately?? does it mean that they will issue bank statement before completing one month??
