Hey folks,

I was married until 2018 with someone, I became a PR in 2015 and my ex also got her PR back then. We separated in 2018, we did the separation agreement in Canada but the proper divorce in the country we are from.

I married again in 2022, we have been living together since the beginning of 2020 in Canada and I want to sponsor that person as a PR. I’m a citizen nowadays.

I have a marriage certificate from the province of BC already (where we married), will I be asked to give the proof of my previous divorce as part of the application ? If so I will need to get this document in my country of origin and translate, but because I’m already married in BC I’m hoping it won’t be necessary ?

thank you

Yes, you'll need to provide the legal documents to show that you are divorced. The new marriage certificate on its own won't be sufficient.

Thank you @YVR123 and @scylla

Another question, in the form it says "Have you sponsored in the past, or are you currently sponsoring, any other members of your family in a different application?"

I became a PR in 2015 and my EX became a PR too, as she was my wife. Does that count as sponsoring someone?

No, this doesn't count as sponsoring someone.

Did you not land in 2018?

Yes, I think I got my dates a bit mixed.
If you landed in Canada in 2018 and got divorced in 2018 how long was it between landing, separation and divorce? How long had you been married to your first spouse and when did you apply to immigrate to Canada?

I just confirmed that I actually divorced in 2020, the separation agreement was in 2019. And I got married in 2015. I was in Canada since ~2016 in work permits

Lots of dates.
