Hello All,
According to OHIP website, we need to be physically in Canada for 153 days before we become eligible for OHIP, so we have to get the private insurance for 5 to 6 months , correct? I read somewhere in the forum that we only had to wait for 90 days. Just wanted to confirm with people that landed in Ontario recently. Thank you.

Who qualifies

To qualify for OHIP, you must meet all of the minimum qualifications listed below plus at least one of the additional requirements.

To meet the minimum qualifications you must:

  • be physically in Ontario for 153 days in any 12‑month period
  • be physically in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after you began living in the province
  • make Ontario your primary home"

Just a question here.
My 90th day since arriving in Canada will be on 29th of August.
However, my company is keen to send me for a 5 day training in New jersey , will it affect the residency obligations or?

Hope someone can comment. Appreciated. TIA.

You will be eligible after 90 days. 153 days requirement is to continue being eligible after your OHIP coverage kicks off.

No point. He will not qualify for coverage if he plans to stay over 153 days he should apply. Or else he can apply but he should not use OHIP unless extreme emergency and he will have to adjust his plans to stay over 153 days. He will need to advise OHIP when he leave and is going for an extended amount of time or is leaving without meeting residency requirements for Facebook. This is to prevent others from stealing your number and committing fraud. He should look at the residency requirements and get a new card or not use the old one for 3 months and call OHIP to inform them that he has returned to Canada and are ready to start the 3 month wait period again.

Currently seems like your cousin will not meet any of the residency requirements.

Hi,

I will be moving on April 28th 2022 and would be completing my 90th day would be on 27th July 2022. My 153 days mark would be 28th September 2022. Would I be able to use public health care after 27th July 2022 and before 28th September 2022? Or would I be able to use health care only after 28th September 2022?

As of this moment, ON no longer has the 90-day waiting period, so you will be eligible for OHIP at day-1, and can access care immediately, PROVIDED you will be, at least, physically present in the province 154 days out of the first 180 days.

In your case, you will be able to use public health care right after you apply for OHIP (assuming you apply on April 29 2022, then that would be the first day you will be able to use it).

However, between April 28 2022 and October 25 2022, you will need to be physically present in the province for at least 154 days.

Hello sir
Please guide
I came here on tourist visa on 7th August.
But on 15th September, I was granted PR.
Now, as per condition of first 153 days (Ontario Health card) residence, whether it will be counted from 6th August or 15th September

Day one would be the day you get OHIP. As long as you plan on meeting the residency requirements to qualify you can use healthcare. You need to be in Ontario from 153 in the first 6 months, 6 months out of the first 12 months and make your permanent home in Ontario.
