OHIP question from Canada-bound couple

I went in to renew my health card today and (other than the regulated proofs for which I presented my passport and DL) the only thing they asked me was had I been out of the province for more than seven consecutive months in the past five years.

how can they check it? you think there can be records in their database?

We are Canadians - we expect that we tell the truth. One booth over another man told the truth which was outside the legally allowed limit and he was was given a break.

I'm sorry, I don't know what to say. We expect to be told the truth and if a red flag is raised by hesitation or instinct we will pursue it because we expect the truth.

I am going back next week and ask the question where does it indicated the bills must be dated after the landing time. I wish it can be the same person who refused the application.

It may be worthwhile to look into personal health insurance as an avenue as well.

Depending on the policy, it may cover midwives and hospital births.

maybe if you get to another officer it will be much more easier to get approved? no point fighting with a ride person, I don't think there's a way to proof something to her, as she set her mind already.

Funny you should say that Suin. While I don't think they should relax the regulations, I can state for a fact that lady assisting me started out the renewal aggressively rude, then just rude (talking about her personal life with her coworker while serving me) but when I asked her a question about about the subject of her conversation and then we talked while she finished the renewal and by the end she was quite friendly. Everyone is just human. Sometimes people have to be reminded of that.

It actually sounds to me like there is a discrepancy with the difference between physical landing versus landing procedure. Did they accept bills prior to physical landing?

No they don't accept bills dated before physical landing and again I guess it depends on the person who is serving you.
Suin not because i want to make any trouble with the women but rather make her understand she can't set her own rules especially when there is nowhere on the form that indicate it must be after the physical landing time.

you are right, MARLENA, and I am the one who successfully applied for OHIP with bills paid before landing.
