I am applying for my child's PR as sponsor and the application has been sent to the visa office outside Canada after my sponsorship was approved. I and my child are both living in Canada now. I am PR and my child is a visitor because she was born outside Canada after my wife and I got PR.

I am now wondering whether my daughter is eligible for OHIP though her current status is visitor. I think if I applied for PR from within Canada, she would have been eligible to apply for OHIP after the initial approval for sponsorship, but how about the case processed outside Canada? It would be appreciated if you could give me advice or URL address I should refer to. Thank you.

from what i understand, children can only be sponsored by the outland route, so inland is not an option.

the short answer is no, as an outland applicant and visitor, your daughter is not eligible for OHIP coverage. she will be eligible to apply once she lands as a PR. Coverage starts 90 days from eligibility date. there is a way to get coverage as an outland applicant, however it is not guaranteed and is time consuming. it requires you to apply for coverage, get denied and then appeal the decision. you are far better off either getting travel insurance and/or going to local clinics who don't charge a lot for any care she may need until she is a PR.
