canuck_in_uk said:Yes, they have to spend 3 months in Ontario to qualify for coverage. They then need to reside in Ontario for a further minimum amount of time in order to retain coverage. Check the website. If they go home, the 3 month waiting period restarts.
jeff198901 said:How much time in total then?!

you are in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date you establish residence in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residence);

I have not read anything about not being able to leave Canada while waiting for OHIP coverage
Rob_TO said:Yes, you physically live here.
There's a list of documents that you can use that would prove you are resident here. http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/forms/ssbforms.nsf/GetFileAttach/014-9998E-82~5/$File/9998E-82.pdf
You just referenced it above.

jeff198901 said:That means you can leave for for 30 days within 6 months. Not that you can't leave at all.
Rob_TO said:Yes, I think if it's less than 30 days that could be considered a vacation so could still count it in waiting period time. Just need to make sure time outside Canada for 6 months after landing doesn't exceed 30 days total.
