Hi,

I became a landed immigrant on 7th October 2015. Then me and my wife had to leave as I had a job contract in United States that I have to complete before I can come and settle in Canada completely. My contract will end in September. My wife is currently 2 months pregnant, we want to give birth to our child in Canada, she can leave for Canada and stay there for three months and i will continue to support her financially from here..I have two questions

- Can she apply for OHIP without me (principal applicant) being there?
- Will she be eligible for the medical benefits for giving birth in Canada?
- What are my options?

Please help, Any advise will be really appreciated...Thank you

Yes - she can apply for OHIP without you.
She will qualify for OHIP three months after she has returned to Canada. If she gives birth before these three months have passed, OHIP will not cover the costs of the birth - you and your wife will be responsible for paying them.
It's too late to get private insurance coverage. So your wife either needs to ensure she returns to Canada three months before the birth of her baby and remains here - or you need to be prepared to pay for the costs of the birth yourself.

Ok, so I just landed today June 18, 2016!!!! :D ;D :D ;D

HURRAY!!!!

But how is a person supposed to apply for OHIP as a new immigrant? In the list of documents you have 3:

1 and 2 are no problem. #1 Proof of Immigration Status, #3 Support of Identity....

But how are you supposed to show #2 (Proof of Residency)? I just got here...how am I supposed to come up with any of the listed acceptable documents? It will be 6 weeks+ before I get any of those items....Is there a way around this or something that a newly landed immigrant can use?

You won't qualify for OHIP until September 18th anyways, so you have plenty of time to get the required documents and apply.

Yeah, I suppose. I imagine it takes time to get processed though...I would think the sooner you can apply, the better. Should have landed in Alberta. LOL

No it's instant. You'll get an OHIP # immediately on the spot once you successfully register. So really you can go a day before the 3 months waiting time is up, and you will be fine.

Thank you so much for your advise, this will be very helpful to plan accordingly.
Also keep in mind that after taking up residency in Ontario, she needs to stay in Ontario at least 153 days in the first 6 months after moving there. If she doesn't do that, they could retroactively cancel her OHIP and back charge her.

Basically this means that she needs to settle in Ontario, spend 90 days waiting to get her OHIP coverage and then spend at least another 63 days before she can leave.

I have a similar question about the OHIP waiting period, but the difference is that i am already a citizen coming back to Canada and want to register for the OHIP, my case is that im pregnant now and expecting in the beginning of December i will be at canada in the 4th of August.
So do i have enough time for the 3 months waiting period? i cant understand the calculation, do they calculate the 3 month from the date i enter Canada or from the date I register for the OHIP?
since the needed documents is proof of residency (bank statement or Phone bill) and both needs 1 month so in that case I have to wait for another 1 month total is 4 months.

3 months from the date of taking up residence.

If you physically arrive back in Canada August 4th, then you'll qualify for OHIP on November 4th. It doesn't matter when you get the necessary documents to actually register with OHIP. Make sure you have suitable private medical insurance until Nov 4th, and double check their policies on pregnancy-related emergencies. Remember that pregnancy is a pre-existing condition so may need to get a special policy for your case.

I am wondering if A dual citizen needs/is able to receive Health insurance for both countries? My son is a dual citizen and he is currently covered under his mother's OHIP, but since I am an American and we are in the US often, if I need to get him health insurance in the US as well, AND/OR OHIP covers a dual citizen in both countries.

OHIP covers him in Canada only.

Yes - you will have to pay cash. However not having insurance is extremely risky. If you end up having an emergency medical issue that requires hospitalization and surgery - this can easily run to hundreds of thousands of dollars. But your choice...
