November 2025 - Citizenship Applications

Every application varies. My background check is completed, even though I provided fingerprints which I’ve read elsewhere can delay the application a bit. However, I haven’t received any updates since taking the test.

Based on my reading of many citizenship timelines and threads on this forum and FB, the checks can be in any of these sequences:
  • No FP ---> BG ---> Citizenship Test ---> LPP ---> Oath
  • FP ---> Citizenship Test ---> BG ---> LPP ---> Oath
  • FP ---> BG ---> Citizenship Test ---> LPP ---> Oath

No FP can be for one who recently had U.S. visa and provided their FP at the consulate office, shared with RCMP.

Some from 2024 to early 2025 (and even few from 2025 to 2026) :
  • LP ---> Citizenship Test --> BG ---> Prohibition ---> Oath
  • FP ---> Citizenship Test ---> BG ----> Interview ---> LPP ---> Oath
So there is no set pattern, the background verification, prohibition check, and test can be finalized in varying orders depending on the office and individual/application file.

It is actually true there is no fixed pattern and this process is very non-linear. But here’s how I see it, based on my research on this forum and others:

First and third scenario are clean files [application matches 100% with what IRCC have in their database about you] and minor issue, respectively. Minor issues would mean identity clarifications, RCMP fingerprint requests, or other minor flags. Fingerprints usually resolve the issue, allowing background to pass.

No FP ---> BG ---> Citizenship Test ---> LPP ---> Oath
FP ---> BG ---> Citizenship Test ---> LPP ---> Oath

But, second scenario (and i have added one more scenario) is tricky and unpredictable.
They may start as routine but can shift into non‑routine processing. Only IRCC truly knows why this happens.

Possible sequences:
FP ---> Citizenship Test ---> BG ---> LPP ---> Oath
OR
FP ---> Citizenship Test ---> LP ---> BG ---> Prohibitions ---> Oath

So looks like final decision is contingent on BG getting cleared. BG is the gatekeeper as it includes both, criminality [RCMP] and security [CSIS].

For these files, LP might finish before BG but full LPP will not complete until BG check is fully resolved. LPP section completion seems more of an administrative “final approval” step, which is why it often updates on the same day everything else clears. LPP involves checking everything one last time to ensure everything that was previously approved is in order (Physical Presence, Background check, Language).
