I came to Canada in 1977 with my parents(biological mother an step father). I had always assumed I was a landed immigrant and filled out any paperwork as such.Recently my mother passed away an I started looking at what I would need for travel documents to holiday etc.Upon acquiring my mothers birth certificate it states she was born in 1949 in Brampton Ont. which I was unaware of..Is there a possibility I am a Canadian Citizen? Possibly dual citizenship? Strange things like receiving voter registration cards(even after filling out the part stating i received in error)and people at Service Canada questioning me after filling forms were I mark landed immigrant and they say I show canadian citizen. I do not have any relatives to ask or help with this. Were do I start to find out exactly were I stand? I still have my original USA passport being i was born there. I have filed tax returns since required age as well. I have my original birth certificate from the states,my copy of original Canadian Immigration ID Record(IM 1000),a certified copy of mothers birth certificate, father unknown but papers showing adoption by step father with paper to support name change. Any help to what i need to do would greatly appreciated,Regards an confused

Thank you for the help and quick response. So do you think I should apply for a Canada Citizen Certificate or a Search for Citizen Records or maybe both. I suppose a Canadian Citizen Certificate may have been done for me by my mother and I may not have known about it.Like I said i know very little about my family history given I didn't even know my mother was born in Canada. I do apologize if some of these questions seem obvious but i do suffer from a rare disease that causes severe "brain fog"as i like to put it. I really do appreciate all help given in this matter. I may have to ask a friend or someones help to fill out any forms that are overly complicated to me..Regards

Also ...Would the gov automatically assume me to be a canadian citizen from my mothers birth without some sort of verification at the time we came to Canada without anyone (ie;family) really knowing about it or could the voter registration cards and things said at service canada be a screw up on the gov part. I have read stories of people not eligible to vote receiving the cards. I also imagine there is not a number to call and simply find out the answer to a question like this either. I will keep researching for now. Tends to get a bit overwhelming reading all the acts and changes over the years. Glad to have found this site

Different times I guess. Current immigrants seem to apply the day they qualify.
Well up until now i really didn't have a reason.I was content with permanent resident status and finding out my mother was born in canada kinda threw me for a loop to. Not so sure i am considered a immigrant if was given Canadian citizenship at birth

You should consider filing either way. Best of luck.

From what I have read if a parent is a Canadian Citizen and has a child outside canada the first generation born to her is considered a Canadian citizen. I am simply trying to find out the proper channel to see what i am classified as and if i am considered a Canadian Citizen, if not then start the process of becoming one or getting a permanent residence card for travel purposes.

If you have a copy of your mother's birth certificate that states she was born in Canada should be enough to prove that you are Canadian.

Apply for a Certificate of Citizenship.
