I'm sponsoring my Nigerian wife under the family class sponsorship. It's been about 8 months so far and we've heard nothing.
Anyway, she can't work because a) she's pregnant and b) she has no work permit, so she wont be able to work until we can afford daycare and she has PR.

So here's the actual question:
Is it true that I can't take any government support for five years because I'm sponsoring her and if I do take any it will show that I don't have the funds to support her? There's no way we'll be able to afford daycare without a government subsidy... And my job isn't exactly set in stone so I'm worried I can't take EI if I get let go...

Please shed some light on this for me. Thanks!

You can take EI. EI is not classified as government assistance.

You can't take welfare / social assistance while you are sponsoring your wife and for three years after she lands and becomes a PR.

I don't know if day care subsidies are classified as government assistance or not.
