Non Continuous Work Experience

Hi there,

I have overall 7 years 4 Months of work experience since Jan 2008- to - till date. However there is a gap of 1 Years 3 Months from Feb-2009 to May 2010. At that time I left my previous job and was a freelance trainer and also associated with a startup company but that doesn't have any registration so I don't have any payslip/Income tax certificate/Relieving letter.

So in the Background declaration form if I write details like below, will this be acceptable?

From (YYYY-MM) - 2009-02
To ( YYYY-MM) - 2010-05
Activity - Freelance Trainer
City or Town - Auckland
Status in Country - Citizen
Name of Company, Employer, School, Facility, as applicable. Not Applicable


Please suggest how to proceed further with this.

Having a gap is perfectly fine, if you're not claiming points for that experience you do not need to mention it in the work history section. Once you receive your ITA you can add it in the personal history section.

You need reference letters to prove your previous work experience, if you're unable to get one then I would recommend avoiding mentioning it in the work history section.

Thanks for the reply. I have all the referral letters/Income Tax Documents/Pay slips for the work experience except the gap between the work experience. So I am not claiming anything for that gap and neither writing in the work history. Its just in the form there is a note which says "Please ensure that you do not leave any gaps in time". I am mentioning the gap details in the form only. I hope that writing fair and accurate details like would be fine.

Oh I see, I thought you were referring to the work history section.

Yes, it is perfectly fine to add it like that in the personal history section. You won't be required to provide any documentation.

Say, If my profile is selected and they ask - do you have any proof for working as a freelancer ? Then here, I don't have anything to show as I was working with few training institutes as and when they give me a call. Also, the payments were also done in cash so no payslip/bank statement to show.

Considering the above scenario, is it good to write "Freelance Trainer" for almost 1 Year and 4 months or shall I write as "Unemployed" to be on the safer side just to avoid extra questions from the Immigration Officer.


Here one of the immigration consultant told me that more that 1 Year gap in the job may have some severe impact on the profile. Although I should anticipate that few questions will be their from officers about this gap and to support/compensate I should have some proof to cover up ( which I don't have any).

I am keenly looking for some suggestions on this as I am on the verge of completion my online application in the portal.

IRCC wouldn't be unduly concerned about any gaps in Work history, the consultant is misinformed and misinforming you as well.
