No legal status while waiting for my permanent residence

Hi,

My post-graduate work permit expired last year, in September 2016. Before, I've submitted my permanent residence application as a CSQ holder under PEQ and it is still in process. However, as I didn't renew my work permit on time, I now don't have any status. Can I change my status to legally stay here and wait till my permanent residence application is decided or I dont have any other choice than to leave Canada?

It's far too late to restore your status from within Canada. You could only do that within 90 days of your work permit expiring. The only way for you to change your status back to legal status is to leave Canada.
