Dear Forumers,

I did my landing last year. It wasn't such a pleasant one since I did encounter one of the most worse case scenario officers upon landing and people who didn't even welcomed me to Canada at the airport, perhaps they thought here is another " European trash" coming to Canada, but overall experience was just OKAY and I received my PR Card within 2 months after landing once I was back home in Europe.

Upon arrival, I had no goods to follow list to show or declare. Why? because I am one of those people who rather buy it all new in Canada than taking and having all been shipped to Canada that sure causes such hassle and headaches. All I will take with me will be some picture albums, CD's and personal items of emotional value and some clothes and shoes etc etc, more seen as if I am leaving for a 2 months stay in a bit suite hotel while I will sure then start building my new home and buy all the necessary stuff one needs to survive.

I soon will do my re-entry to Canada and start establishing the new life in there, this means that I soon will need to apply for a SIN and get started looking for a rental, medicare, job etc.

Last year I did take care of a non interest bearing savings account that can be easily attached to a chequing account when back in Canada like I was said and I will also be given a credit card using another savings account as collateral so I 'd be able to build up a credit history which is nice but also a safety deposit box at bank for free.

Now I have two questions with regard to this upclose and future move.

1. I 've not exactly decided where I ll reside. I ll be driving/flying around to different cities and places to see if I LIKE the place, but sure Calgary so far has most of its appeal to me rather than Vancouver which isn't that women friendly, gay friendly and/or a safe place with a high crime ranking across Canada but sure located in one of the most beautiful settings in the world, so my question is: Do I have to apply for SIN in the city I decide to reside and establish myself or can I just apply for a SIN upon re-entering in the city I land again and go collect it or will it be given out immediately?

Is it so that one will be provided with a SIN within a few minutes after visiting a CIC office nearby your hotel, appartment etc?

Shall I wait for the application until I am settled in my new rental home and then apply for it so I can immediately after start looking for jobs etc.

2. Every woman does carry jewelry or owns gold/silver. That is the only thing I carry and should declare upon re-entering I suppose.

I don't have much, if I was that rich, I wish I was, but just a few gold stuff not worth even declaring or mentioning, would I need to fill out a goods to follow list and hand it out to an officer at the airport? I know you don't need to pay any fees or taxes on gold but perhaps on jewelry but I am not that sure.

Most of you here have some similar experience in that regard, would you mind sharing that with me?

Many thanks,
C

No, you can apply the SIN in any Service Canada office across the country (not just the city you are residing). You can get the number immediately and the card will send to you by ordinary mail. For details, see http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sc/sin/index.shtml

Is it so that one will be provided with a SIN within a few minutes after visiting a CIC office nearby your hotel, appartment etc?

Sorry that I am a guy. I hope there are someone who carries jewelry can answer your question

Thank you Steaky for the reply. I will stay in a suite hotel for sometime before I have my own place but suppose they ll send it to any address.

I thought you could get it directly at the SCOffice, but obviously it ll be sent by mail. Just the same issue as a PR card then.

You can get the social insurance number immediately from the Service Canada Office, however, the card will be sent to you by ordinary mail just like the PR Card.

Hi C,

Here's the answers...

I did my landing last year... Upon arrival, I had no goods to follow list to show or declare...

I soon will do my re-entry to Canada and start establishing the new life in there, this means that I soon will need to apply for a SIN.. rental, medicare, job etc.
U could have applied for the SIN last yr itself. It was a 5 minutes job. Not a prob though, u can do it this time too. Medicare, the Canadian Health Insurance Plan, has a 3 months wait period in most provinces, except AB & Manitoba, I guess. U'd apply for it once u have Residential Ties in Canada for 3 months.

Now I have two questions with regard to this upclose and future move.

1. I 've not exactly decided where I ll reside... Do I have to apply for SIN in the city I decide to reside and establish myself or can I just apply for a SIN upon re-entering in the city I land again and go collect it or will it be given out immediately? Is it so that one will be provided with a SIN within a few minutes after visiting a CIC office nearby your hotel, appartment etc? Shall I wait for the application until I am settled in my new rental home and then apply for it so I can immediately after start looking for jobs etc.
U should apply for the SIN asap. It doesn't matter where u r staying. Hotel, rental or otherwise. SIN is a federal doc & applies across Canada. Not just in one province. It is obtained from the Service Canada Offices, which r pretty much available in every neighborhood. U get the SIN over the counter, on the spot, no waiting. The SIN Card though comes via regular post & reaches u in 4-7 days. The SIN (Number) suffices for all your necessities in Canada. The SIN Card is seldom required. Yes, for the jobs your prospective employer would like to get your SIN, not the Card invariably.

2. Every woman does carry jewelry or owns gold/silver. That is the only thing I carry and should declare upon re-entering I suppose... would I need to fill out a goods to follow list and hand it out to an officer at the airport? I know you don't need to pay any fees or taxes on gold but perhaps on jewelry but I am not that sure.
Unfortunately u r no longer party to this facility. The Goods to Follow List (Form B4) is required to be Stamped by the CBSA on your 1st landing. It serves to facilitate your bringing anything & everything in the future, Duty Free. If that action wasn't done on 1st landing, u lost that liberty. Hereon, anything that u bring-in might be levied a Duty. However, u r a smart traveller, do not believe in carrying goods across the Globe... That's the way to go. Hence, it'd not effect u much. Those jewelry that u mention, probably would be sported on person. Thus, they do not attract any duties, unless u r decked like a Goddess. Ditto for other Personal Effects, Clothing & tid-bits... No Duty.

Hope I answered all.

Good Luck.

Qorax, Thank you so much for your reply and you girl, definitly, did help me to find the answers I was kind of worried about.

I am just carrying 2 pieces of luggage with me according to the airline carrier policy and rules & gosh, I had to stop laughing at this one, no I won't be sported up like a Diva or Cleopatra! A few gold pieces that I can carry in my purse won't be such a bad idea that I by the way have bought in Canada myself during previous trips and carry less than 10K cash for sure.

I shall sure asap apply for a SIN upon arrival and hopefully, I won't be facing much annoying comments on the reasons why I came to Canada by Indians or Chinese or I shall teach them a good lesson myself. LOL

Just face them with the new world order upcoming and they will close their mouths and praise the lord for being in Canada, safe and sound. LOL

Dear C,

Did u obtain the Yellow Paper, for your [Canadian purchased] Gold, from the airport BSO, when u were leaving Canada? If not, unfortunately it'll again attract duty. Unless u have the receipts to support your claim. Nonetheless, with those 2 bags, u'd yet cross duty free. Relax on that front. Uhh yes, the damn 23Kgs/1bag/pax allowance of the airlines.

I'm sure those Indians or Chinese or anyone for that matter, do not mind u around them. Here we r pretty much multi-cultural & Canada is a melting-pot of all religion, faith, color, creed et all. We sit together, party together, visit each other's seplication, work together & quite often wed across the cultures too; in fact I haven't noticed a raised eyebrow in any such get-togethers/meetings. We r sure hand-in-hand in everything. So, u might not encounter that situation.

Rest assured we respect your choice of relocation.

Welcome aboard.

Viva Canada!

Hi Q,

Oh no, nobody did point that out to me when I last time left. ... gosh, now it means I have to wear it all and look like Cleopatra or ask Mom or Sister to bring them for me when they visit me in future, little by little. LOL

I got one big suitcase full of shoes and some books and other stuff and one with clothing and other necessary stuff. I don't even bring in my laptop and any electronic device since I rather buy them all new in Canada, been saving for such and I that way also help the local economy and no airport hassle.

Yes, I know, the reason why I did choose for Canada was the multi-cultural character and been living here in one of the most prejudiced and prejudgemental European countries and in the countryside where one only see blonde hair and blue eyes and hardly anything else, it won't be difficult for me to face any misbehaviour.

In fact, in my case, whenever visiting family and friends in the States or Canada, people wonder what I do in Europe and why I stay there and why I don't move over there? :D So, let's hope they will still treat me that way.

Last year, when we did our landing, we had no goods to follow list with us and told the officers what was the plan, they told us to not worry and bring in our goods to follow list next time we arrive, that was told in Toronto, now I hope they don't change their mind. Or else I shall show them some nice heels!

Not a problem, Charlotte,

U can enter Canada with that twin baggage duty free. Don't worry on that. A bit of goods here-n-there is of no concern for the CBSA, even w/out the B4 form. U may carry those jewelry as well. Wear most & carry a few in those cases.

That officer, on your 1st landing, might be cool. But others won't be. The procedure here is to declare the GTF on landing. However, personal effects are unaccountable. So, once again, u'd be fine with that.

Happy journey.

Qorax

I suppose so.

the 2nd Officer upon our first landing was anything BUT kind to us. He was rude, totally cold and didn't even respond to us when we greeted him politely and as we are used to greet others. He just stamped our visa's and was rude all the way along and he even didn't accept my family's address with regard to the PR card (that later was sent to us anyway when we fill out the form using a relative's address and faxed it in), and when we were all set and done, nobody did welcome us or gave us any documents or bags what so ever with information. I myself have done a lot of research ever since we did our first landing and learnt much, we just forgot to apply for SIN during our stay there.

Knowing we were staying for a few weeks and were supposed to be back home again and told this to the CBSA officers and directed to the right agents, they didn't accept our goods to follow list and rejected it and told us (only verbally) to fill the original form out and take it with us next time we do the landing.

I hope this time we will at least see a smile when we land.

Btw, do we have to go through the whole procedure again? Or can we just collect our twin luggage and head out to pick up the rental car?

I suppose we just show our PR card to the first officer and then can go and collect our luggage like everybody else. No need to go through the whole procedure.

We all hear and read a lot about first landing, but not quite much on 2nd landing!?

There's just One "Landing"... The 1st landing. Subsequent entries into Canada r pure Entry/Exit to the country.

No, in your forthcoming entry u don't go thru the whole process. Yes, it's just 'show the PR card' & venture out via the baggage carousel.
