Newcomers, how much do you pay for your car insurance

It is now four years since my arrival to Canada, and I am still paying 1700 CAD a year for my Honda Civic (Ottawa, with comprehensive + all perils). And I supposedly should consider myself lucky with this sum. My spotless insurance history in the former country and in the Canada is not honoured. My canadian coworkers pay much less for the same coverages.

Any experience or advice you can share? When can I expect that my insurance premium will come in the reasonable range that is 1000 CAD a year.

Move to BC and your insurance history in your former country and other provinces would be honored.

Insurance rates vary widely based on numerous factors such as the type of car you have, your age, your gender, your location, etc. so it's hard to compare. I'm a female, over 25, went to driving school and had no tickets. I have had a 2000 Honda Civic for about 6 years now and while I was living in Toronto and on my dad's insurance policy I was also paying about $1700... and that wasn't even for good coverage. When I moved to Northern Ontario on my own policy, that dropped to about $1200. I still pay over $1000 now... for liability coverage only of a 17 year old car. I think Honda Civics are frequently stolen which drives up the insurance rates. Last year we bought a brand new car (a Subaru). My husband who has only lived in Canada for 3 years with no previous driving history and who did not take driving school (which gives you an insurance discount) is the primary driver of this car and we pay less than $1200 for comprehensive coverage of this car. We are in Central Ontario. So... I don't know how they calculate the rates but they are definitely lower if you are outside of an urban area.

My suggestion is to shop around at renewal time. Get multiple quotes from a few companies, or use a broker.

I pay >$3,000 annually for a 2010 Honda Civic in the GTA area. That was the best rate I could get even though I had no accidents, tickets, claims in the last 7 years I was in the US.

We pay just over $1300 for comprehensive cover on a 3 year old Honda Fit in K-W. Our original online quote was about $5000, so it pays to shop around and probably involve a reliable broker.

i'm on the same boat...i pay around $3200 for a 2012 Kia SUV (its the lowest i could get, there were other quotes that went as high as $6000), its my first year of insurance coverage in canada, and i didn't even bother to bring my 8 years driving history (from a 3rd world country) as i know it wouldn't be considered here by default.
