Hi,
I am a New Zealand Citizen that was granted a work visa back in 2015. I traveled in Canada for a few months, not working, before having to return home for a medical reason.
I am wanted to move back to work and live as my brother is over there with his Canadian fiance, about to have their first child.
I have been told that because I didn't work while I was in Canada that I may be able to restore my work visa status? Has anyone got anymore information on this? Any little bit would help me out a lot!
Thanks :)

Who told you that you could restore anything ? Others can comment as well but work permits tend to be use within the validity date and after 5 years would expect to be well expired by now. What type of permit was it given for example if was an IEC then that would have been a once only opportunity.

I was told by a couple of people that because I didn't work while I was in Canada that I may be able to be given another work visa or restore the one I had as it wasn't used. I know been a NZ citizen I only get one visa and that's it. I just thought it would be worth looking into.. thanks for the response.

Unfortunately you will not qualify for another work permit or be able to restore the one you had. It's a 'use it or lose it' policy. You cannot extend or restore your permit because you didn't use it for the full duration. You also do not qualify to apply for another one - you have already used up your one participation.

Have you got any suggestions for me on how I could possibly return to Canada and work? What are some other options for me to take?

Depends on your profile. If you have a few years of skilled work experience and meet other criteria - then applying to immigrate might be possible. You'll have to research what it will take - suggest you start with the Express Entry program (you need at least 440 points to be selected).

Another option would be to continue your studies in Canada as a full time student so that you can qualify for a study permit. However this is an expensive option since you'll have to pay international student fees.

To come to Canada on a work permit, you need a job offer from an employer in Canada and an approved LMIA. You should assume this won't be possible since the vast majority of employers are not willing to go through the LMIA process.

Would you know anything about me going down as a dependent on my boyfriends visa application. He is an Australian applying for his first work visa into Canada?

Have you lived together for at least one full year continuously to become common law and do you have proof that you have lived together for a full year?
