Only if returning before Sept 29.
After Sept 29 all visa-exempt travelers require an eTA to fly directly to Canada. A Canadian citizen is not able to get an eTA, so you won't be able to board a plane to Canada with just the British passport.

So basically the only way you could re-enter Canada staring October is via car at a land border.

so if returning before the 29th, i can get back in with just my british passport, correct? no need to take any proof of citizenship with me for the CBSA guard?

CBSA should be able to determine you're a Canadian citizen even with just your British passport. However having proof of Canadian citizenship on hand may make the process quicker/easier for you.

Why not apply for a new passport? You can get a passport in 10 working days. Depending on where you reside in Canada, you can get it between 2-9 days.

Agreed. Saves you the hassle of getting stuck at the airport. Most of the time, the passport is delivered within a week.

You can not apply for an eTA if you are a Canadian Citizen. You must show proof of your Canadian Citizenship through the following three documents only:

1. valid Canadian passport;
2. Canadian temporary passport; or
3. Canadian emergency travel document.

You can renew your Canadian Passport in just two days if you go for Urgent service.

I did mine in Ottawa last year. I had to show proof of travel and of course paid extra fees :P
