Need suggesting regarding PR card renewal

Hi guys,

I got my PR card in January/2016. From 2016 to 2019 December, I visited canada several times and total time would be less than 1 year/12 months. From January 2020, I am staying in Canada permanently.Now I have to apply PR renewal on coming 2021 January. for application, I could not meet 730 days time frame on January,2021. What should I do? Should I apply with explanation or I should apply later fulfiling 730 days barrier?

Your residency obligation starts from initial landing date not PR card issue date so keep that in mind. Best advice would be to ensure you have met the residency obligation before applying to renew given applying before meeting the RO you could lose your PR status. Also keep in mind the 730 days needs to be in the 5 years before the application time so any credit in 2016 starts to expire if you apply in 2021 and so on if 2017/2022 ...

You can still live in Canada with an expired PR card just not travel until renewed.
