Need help with taking inventory of household goods to import once PR is approved

Hi there

I (Canadian) am having a very hard time finding the proper information on what exactly my husband(American) will have to inventory on Canada Customs forms......Does anyone know of a good site for this?

- my husbands is an Auto Technician ....does he have to list the hundreds of tools he owns?
- does he have to list every item of clothing?

We have applied for Spousal Sponsorship and permanent residency and are waiting out the process....but we want to be productive during this time.

he does not need to list cloths, tools and other routine stuff like that..

but he might need to list jewellery, electronic items, Car and any other item which is expensive.

there might be more items to list but this is what I know. May be someone experienced can give a better answer.

I understand your problem related to moving for settlement in Canada.

Take it easy.

There are two forms : B4 is the main page and B4a is continuation sheet. If you are taking all the stuff together with you in the car while crossing the boarder, keep the form filled as below;

B4a: complete the details of your husband where applicable.

List the items group wise and not individually.


Eg:

Cloths assorted - xx box ( how many box ?) CAD 100 (?)
Shoes - xx pair - CAD 100 (?)

Linen assorted ( means sheets, towels etc) xx box - CAD 150 (?)

Kitchen utensils assorted xx box - CAD (?? )



Tools: Individually list very important and costly items:

Eg:

Electric drill - Black and Decker Model xxxxx Seial # - CAD 200

Power drivers 3 - Snap On model xxxxx Serial # - CAD 300

Group small mixed tools of various make, model and kind:

Assorted automobile repair tools xx box - CAD 200

Assorted wrenches . Various types xx Box - CAD ??
...........................
............................

I hope you got an idea now how to list them.

I just gave an example. Your husband can show approx value of each important item or each group. Let him decide how to sort it.
List only major tools or equipment with its model and serial number. All other small tools can be shown as "assorted xxxx tools" or "Assorted wrenches", ... as the case may be. . The value may not be exact and no invoices necessary unless it is a very costly equipment.

If any of said items are sent by trailer as unaccompanied then consider it as "Goods to Follow". You should prepare 2 copies of B4 forms while crossing boarder. One copy will be retained at the POE with CBSA and the other will be stamped and returned to you. Your husband can show the stamped form and get the stuff cleared without paying duty when it arrive.
