hello

need help for my cousin.

My cousin travel history since he is PR
He came to Canada as PR January 2012 for first time.
left canada february 2012
came back to Canada February 2014
since february 2014 till date continuous stay in Canada.

His PR card expired in January 2017 and he realised now.

Is he still a Permanent resident after the expiry of PR card.
Did he maintained PR status as he stayed back home from 2012-2014
If eligible, Is it wise to stay for another year till 2018 when he can apply citizenship keeping expired PR card? as PR card fees to renew is high.

kindly reply to my questions . thanks

He is still a permanent resident as long as he meets the 2 out of 5 years rule. The PR card is just a travel document. So ask your cousin to apply for renewal if he wants to travel. Also PR card is required for job change, health card renewal and some more that I cannot remember from the top of my head. So if he can renew I would suggest him to renew. Also even if he applies in 2018 he has one more year for CIC to approve his application that makes two to three years without valid PR Card. If he has to leave the country for some business trip or emergency situation then he cannot return.

So I strongly suggest him to apply for renewal but that's just my suggestion.

To renew PR card the fees are only $50. As long as he has 2 years in 5 years in canada as PR your cousin should be ok.Expired PR card does not mean you have no status.I hope this helps

As long as your cousin has lived in Canada 2 years out of 5 years,he's still a PR......
My PR card expired 2 months before(or was it after?? Can't remember exactly) I applied for citizenship... IRCC officer I talked to on their call center told me it's ok to have an expired PR during citizenship application, just as long as I don't intend to leave Canada (coz i'll need to have a valid PR card to be able ENTER Canada) and during my test, interview and even oath,IRCC officer didn't even look at my PR card.....became a citizen with no hitch at all (no RQ,no FP and no additional docs needed)
