Hi,

I was living in the US most of last year. I landed in Jun 2016, resigned from the US job in Oct 2016 and also moved to Canada permanently in Oct 2016 and started working here. I'll be considered as a US person for tax purpose. Need some help on these questions:

1) Am I considered a resident of Canada for tax purpose from the landing date or move-in date? Any reference for this?

2) Do I need to pay Canadian tax for the income in the US from Jun 2016 (landing) to Oct 2016 (move-in)?

3) Do I need to pay US tax for the income in Canada from Oct 2016 (move-in) to end of 2016?

4) How can the US-Canada tax treaty benefit me? I guess if I have to do #3, then I probably do not need to pay Canadian tax for that period? What form needs to get filled to make use of US-Canadian tax treaty on the US side and the Canadian side?

5) Do I need to a send along a copy of completed US tax return along with my Canadian taxes to the CRA?

6) And conversely, do I need to send along a copy of completed Canadian tax return to the IRS?

7) Any online resources or thread to help out in US-Canadian tax especially for people who have moved from US to Canada?

Thanks!

I landed in May of 2016.
To answer your questions..
1. Landing date. My reference is Liberty tax company and I also read it in the USA IRS site. Look for expats info.
2., 3., and 4....the tax treaty keeps you from paying double tax. File US tax first.
5. Yes
6. Not sure as I don't have any Canadian income, I only have a retirement pension from the US. Check CRA website for info or maybe someone else here will answer. But I did report my worldwide income to CRA.
7. I used the IRS website and the CRA . if you have 10k or more in a foreign bank account any time during the tax year, you must send an FBAR form to the US to report it. It is not sent with your tax return. It can be done online easily.
I did my own US tax return, filed the FBAR, then went to Liberty tax office with my copies and they are filing my Canadian tax return. I used Liberty because my husband uses them and we think they do a good job.

Good luck and I hope this helps.
