Need help: Got visa, but cannot go this year

A friend of mine has got study visa for this year's September session, but due to a family emergency he is unable to join this year and is planning to get a deferment from his University for next year's session.

In such a scenario, does he need to apply for visa again next year? What are the chances of rejection in such cases?
