its very strange, is there no soft prof left on this forum.
Because unless you get a job offer in Canada, you aren't eligible. Skilled worker has been suspended until at least January and IT jobs haven't been on the list for 2 years.

IT and software development in Canada is minimal, and they are producing enough people on their on Universities, so it's being outside of the list of need professions for a while. RIM just fired 5000 developers!

I will chime in here a bit late.

In the Vancouver market at least, there are a broad range of development positions advertised on a regular basis by our local IRAP representative and on the various software development lists that I have seen. Those for mobile platforms (iOS, android, etc) are definitely in demand, but I also see calls for java and C#. While I know people working in my own field (operating systems, embedded systems) I've never seen a job listed for anyone in that field at all.

Many of the opportunities are with very small companies. One reason for this is that the Canadian tax code is strongly preferential for small companies via the SR&ED tax credit. For a qualified Canadian Controlled Private Corporation with a modest number of developers (certainly less 15) this refundable tax credit covers the majority of direct payroll costs. Here in BC the credit is 68.5% of qualified development work.

While larger companies can also take advantage of the tax credit, above a certain threshold ($2 million as I recall) the amount that can be claimed diminishes fairly quickly. For companies that do not qualify as CCPCs and those who exceed the amount allowed by CRA can only claim a non-refundable 20% tax credit.

The downside to this is that it means most employers are not really set up to deal with obtaining LMOs. I'm not sure why - while annoying, they are not particularly onerous to obtain and for true in-demand fields there's generally not much of an issue obtaining them.

BC does have a shortage of software development personnel. That is one reason why the IT exemptions lasted longer in BC than in other provinces (although those lapsed recently). But the range of required skills is quite broad. Many of the real world skills are adaptable as well, but they emphasize real world experience, not education. In general, I'd rather have a college drop-out with 5 yeas of real-world experience than a new PhD in Computer Science.

Good luck!
