I am a permanent resident of Canada who lives in Winnipeg.

My wife and I are spending a night in North Dakota (we are here now) but we realised that my NZ passport expires in 4 days. My PR card is valid for 3 more years so is not an issue but is my passport going to be a problem getting back into Canada?

I'm hoping the US customs wouldn't have let me in if I couldn't leave but am worried.

What should I expect tomorrow when we head back?

Any help would be great!

My opinion is that as you have overlooked the very important matter of your travel document (passport) expires, now you are on a deadline. Being you are a Canadian PR you can travel back to Canada immediately before expiring the passport. Otherwise, apply for a Limited Validity Emergency Travel Document (ETD) from NZ Embassy in Washington DC or the NZ Consulate-General in Los Angeles.
