Hi all,

My spouse is in India. He left Canada in March 2025, and at that time I applied for PR and got approved. He was a non accompanying spouse listed on my application. I am sponsoring him and they requested interview. Can someone please confirm if it’s better for me to go there and attend the interview as well. We have been together since 2019, and he left to regularize his status. The only issues are that our families are not supportive of our relationship except for my sister and our friends. We are worried they would reject the application. We were married in Canada, and our families are not involved in any decision making, but he is living with his family due to financial issues. Our situation is very different but we are worried if they would reject due to our families not being supportive and we are from different religions. @canuck78 @scylla can anyone pls give insight on the interview process or whether it would be better for me to be there? I have issues with my family members due to some childhood trauma and that is preventing me from visiting them. I haven’t met them since 2018 or visited India but I do occasionally call them. They won't let you go into the interview with him, but if you want to go and support him you can, although I am not sure if they will even let you go into the embassy with him. That said, you can definitely type a letter about your position, that you got married in Canada, the families are not supportive and that you don't have a close relationship with limited contact. I haven't spoken to mine in 20 years, so I even explained that in the application.

Thank you for your reply. The letter said that if I am in India, I will have to accompany him or they will call me. I already wrote a story of our relationship and mentioned everything. We have money transfers, photos and video call including text messages and all. I will write another letter just in case.

Oh interesting. They don't always ask to speak to both people. Yes, just provide a letter to explain everything once more, for your peace of mind. Also, if you are able to travel, then do so... I think it's nice to be able to support the spouse if you can, if it's feasible financially. All the best to you!

Thank you very much! I do not think they will interview both of us together, but I am guessing they might want to ask questions to me as well. It’s very expensive and taking a vacation is hard to get at this time.

Yes, I would imagine traveling to India is costly but also takes a lot of time and is exhausting. Just be available on the phone as suggested by IRCC and type out the letter for your husband to take to the embassy with him the day of the interview.

Yes, that’s what I am planning to do. We haven’t seen each other in a year and we were hoping to travel to Thailand and this came up. I will do the letter and prep all the docs for this.

The most important part may actually be the fact that you have an in person visit in the ~1.5 years since he left. IRCC likes to see that couples meet in person over time while acknowledging that there are constraints like savings and holiday time.

He cannot come here due to his status and I am the only person who can go. I think going would be a good priority at this time given that they might be harsh on us as we did not invite any of our family and had a very lowkey wedding, but that was in 2019.

If you had a reason for a small wedding that isn’t usually an issue although your spouse is now living with their parent so contact has not been severed. The fact that your spouse is trying to secure status after being undocumented likely one of the concern and so is the fact that they returned home and then you applied for PR can raise concerns that your relationship had broken up.

We got married very soon since meeting each other. At that time, I was just 19 and he was 21. Now we are mid to late 20s, and we have been together. We decided him leaving last year as his passport was expiring this year and me getting an ITA came at the right time. We also took this as an opportunity to re evaluate our relationship as we have not been apart- I have some past traumas as a kid and we were thinking of making our relationship healthier and it did with this distance. We already mentioned all this but I don’t think I can explain our relationship to them like that. May be me visiting would be best
