Hello!
I want to change my name on my passport, do I still need to submit a new adult passport application and have a guarantor? And I am thinking of using my license as a supporting ID, does that have to be in my new name?

Thank You

Yes, you have to submit a new application.

Your supporting ID must have your new name.

I don't believe you need a guarantor but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Hey,
So i'd like to get a legal name change in order to add my family name to my Canadian documents. I am aware of how to get a legal name change, as it is very straight forward. My question however is after I get the certificate of name change from the Ontario government, how would I go about changing my name legally on both my passport and citizenship certificate? Passport offices are swamped, and they offer no information on where I have to go with the proof of name change in order to change my legal name on the passport. I am also aware that name change on citizenship certificates takes a very long time as they are swamped due to the back-log as a result of covid. If I were to just change my name on the passport, would I need to change the name on the citizenship certificate even if I have both the passport in the new name and the name change certificate?
Any advice would be appreciated as the government websites when it comes to information with changing your name on the passport is not helpful in the slightest.
Thanks!

I don't have the exact information that you were asking. But I suggest you to search for applying for a new passport with new/different name from previous passport. I do not think you can "change" your name on your existing passport.

You apply for a new passport with your change of name docs.
https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio.../services/canadian-passports/change-name.html

I believe it is highly recommended (required? -read instructions) that you have a few other docs / ID showing you use the new name. Basically this means in addition to the change of name certificate, you change at least your driver's license or some other docs.

DO NOT apply for the citizenship certificate first. Do the passport. Passport offices are basically working normally now, i.e. it might take a month or two, or less if you have urgent reasons/pay for faster.

And yes, you're right - basically no-one ever shows their citizenship certificate to anyone ever again except for getting their passport. Change it if you want, it might take quite a while. Otherwise, leave it and don't change it, if you prefer - because ANYONE who asks to see your citizenship certificate will be fine with the cert + change of name docs. Almost everyone will be fine with the passport as proof of citizenship (indeed prefer it because photograph).
