I noticed some posts about FBI clearance and fingerprinting. Since I recently went through this process,
I thought I will post my experience;

*Apply early. Currently FBI is taking about 6 weeks but it varies with workload and it used to be 12-13 weeks before.
*They do not expedite, though some posters claim otherwise. I gave them my deadline and a request to expedite but they emailed that min. 6 weeks are required. I got it after 7 weeks from the date I applied.
*An email to know the status of your app is
liaison@leo.gov
*State police clearances in US are only necessary if asked for specifically by Canadian visa office.
*Fingerprinting;
DO not do it yourself; there is a high likelihood your prints will be returned by FBI since
1. stamp-pad prints leave smudges even with a lot of care and
2. FBI requires rolling prints which are not easy to take by oneself.

I do not know about other cities, but in New Delhi, JK consultancy in Dwarka is very good. He charges a bit high( 3k-4k negotiable)
but his prints are perfect, professionally taken by a special roller and ink. He carries FBI cards. One needs one's picture ID.
I first tried my local police station who directed me to CID fingerprinting dept phone no.but I could never get through.
