My current closed WP w/LMIA is until Jan 2021. Can I change jobs right now?

Hi, I am Currently working with a closed work permit w/ LMIA, and it lasts until January.
I was able to find another job with LMIA that gave me a job offer, and I wish to move, but the company im working in right now warns me that I cannot change jobs until January.
Is this true?

No but you need to apply for a new WP and it needs to be approved before you can work at the other company.

As for that, for the mean time due to COVID19, it seems that I only have to wait 2 weeks for some confirmation.
