MSP sign up in common-law relationship

I just became a PR and wondering if I need to sign up for my own MSP account or do we just have to change my partner's to add me?
What is the benefit of being on the same account aside from the low income benefits?
Is it mandatory to have connected accounts or can I just go ahead and sign up on my own?

It is not mandatory to sign up together. You can sign up on your own.

Note that if either of you were to try to claim Premium Assistance, it is based on family income.
