@Chutsk10 @KingKcaj Thanks so much for the replies! We paid all of our PR fees in December and have the receipt from Dec 15, so hopefully the 3 month waiting period starts from that date, since from what I understand that was when I was first eligible....Would have applied immediately if I had known, but didn't even realize it was possible until now! Thanks again!

This is amazing news as I have been paying for supplemental insurance for the last 4 months since sending in my PR application. Does anyone know if getting a BC care card would also be sufficient ID to also obtain a BC driver's license?

We just moved to BC and are looking into this too! I called and talked to a specialist - she gave me a list of things to include on my husband's MSP application, said it took 21 days to process. We weren't sure if this works for implied status situations too- but she said to apply anyways since we have all the paperwork in and COVID has changed a lot of situations. It is all reviewed as case-by-case.

@Mattyciv - I was told couldn't get a BCDL or ID until my OWP or PR was approved though.

Just wanted to update here in case anyone else is looking for more info on this: We mailed in my request to be added to my spouse's MSP along with relevant PR receipts and documents showing my visitor status in BC, delivered to the Health Insurance BC office on Feb 15th. On March 8th we got a letter back in the mail stating that I now have MSP coverage, starting as of March 1st! Not exactly sure how they determined that start date, since our PR receipt shows that we paid everything on Dec 15th, but either way, very happy that the process was relatively fast and easy!

Hope the extra info is helpful to anyone else who's looking to do the same!!

Hi,

We are in the same situation. My wife came to Canada on her Portuguese eTA on May 1st and we applied for her permanent residency today, May 18th 2023 with all the PR fees paid in full (we have the receipts). Could you please guide us the steps we need to take in order for her to apply MSP. She is pregnant and her due date is Sept 16th. The situation is worrisome and we are not sure as to when her coverage would begin. Please guide us.

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/health/health-drug-coverage/msp/bc-residents/eligibility-and-enrolment/are-you-eligible/applicants-for-permanent-resident-status

In some cases, the spouse or child of a B.C. resident, who is an Applicant for Permanent Resident Status, may be eligible for temporary coverage. The B.C. resident must be a citizen of Canada or is lawfully admitted to Canada for permanent residence.

For spouses and children who apply for Permanent Resident Status while in B.C., the wait period begins on the date the sponsorship fee (if applicable), application for permanent residence fee and right of Permanent Residence fee have been paid in full to IRCC. If all fees are not paid at the same time, the wait period begins on the date the last fee is paid.

[Based on your information, the waiting period started today]

And, this:

Based on the preceding, Canadian citizens and persons with permanent resident status in Canada are eligible to apply for benefits. In addition, certain non-permanent residents may be deemed residents and thus be considered eligible; for example, many holders of study permits and work permits if the permits are valid for six or more months, and many applicants for permanent resident status who are the spouse or child of a resident. Tourists and visitors to B.C. are not eligible for provincial health care benefits.

Can you please tell where and how do we apply for her MSP? I want to know what the procedure is, do we apply online or apply by mail?

Try calling them:
Lower Mainland: (604) 683-7151
Elsewhere in B.C.: 1 (800) 663-7100 (toll-free)

Tell them that your wife just applied for PR and that you've paid all fees (today).

Good luck!

Would add that you still have 2.5 months until she will qualify for MSP so even once you qualify for MSP there is an up to 3 month wait period before you actually receive MSP so your timing is very tight and will have to pay out of pocket for many appointments and hope the baby doesn’t arrive early.
