Hello,

Would any of you know what happens to the provincial health care coverage when moving to a different province?

My family and I are in Quebec as temporary workers. I hold a temporary work permit (postdoc, till November) and my husband an open work permit. We (husband, I, and our two kids) are covered by the Quebec health insurance plan. This summer, we are planning to move to a different province. My husband was offered a job in another province and I would like to carry out an internship there as part of my postdoc research. My concern is that, by changing the province, we would loose our Quebec coverage. Is this the case? Or could my husband apply for the health care plan in the other province? My husband would be working till November with his existing open work permit (valid till Nov) and the company will then apply for a new work permit for him in the fall.

Thanks in advance for your help : )

It's best to contact your province and the province you are going to so that they can figure out which province will cover you - they might bridge the benefits till you get a new provincial health card.

If you do have a waiting period in place then you can get a Visitors policy for a few months till the provincial coverage kicks in.

Thanks so much for your reply. It sounds like a good idea to contact the provinces directly. So far, I've only visited their websites and it didn't give me enough information to figure out if we are still covered. I was just worried that we would loose our coverage when moving to a different province and will not qualify for new coverage in the new province since we are just here on temporary work visa. But hopefully this is not the case.
All the best :)
