I am 51 years old and own a long established locksmith company in Johannesburg . I have other companies too varying from accommodation , refrigeration , import / export , black hair salons and signage . I have experience in food and take away as well as hotel . All of which I have owned . I have family in Vancouver who would assist with relocation . My question is that I would like to move my businesses , locks stock and barrel to Vancouver . However , I am concerned that my age may be an issue despite the fact that I would probably bring with me approximately 5 million rand . I realize that this is not much after the exchange rate has had a go at it . I was looking at real estate in Canada and a similar home to what I have now would be in the region of between 3 - 5 million Canadian dollars . That works out to about 24 million rand !!!. As you can see this is quite mind boggling . Has anyone got any idea's or suggestions which could be of help to get my mind around . Any suggestion ?.

You really have two options.

1) You can apply as an entrepreneur through the federal program. However you'll need a net worth of at least $1.6 million CAD to apply and be prepared to make an investment of a minimum of $800,000 in Canada when you arrive.

2) You can apply through the BC program. You'll need to be able to make an investment in the province of $500,000 and also meet the other criteria outlined in the link below:

I'm not sure what to say to you on the real estate front. Vancouver is an expensive city to buy real estate in. I supposed your options are either to purchase something in Vancouver that is significantly smaller than what you have now - or forget about moving to Vancouver and relocate to a small town in BC instead.

5 Million Rand is only about 550K Canadian.

Yep . unfortunately our South African rand is worthless although in South Africa I am considered well off . I checked and to replace my present home with the same in Canada would set me back 28 million ZAR . So what other options are available ?. I have three brothers living in Canada for the past 30 years as well .

If you can't afford, you can always downsizing your new home in Canada. In fact, many people move from a bigger home to a small one.
