Hi,
I'm just starting to look into moving my stuff from my former home to Canada and was wondering what happens at the border if you use a moving company.
I believe I have to meet the truck at the border, but anyone know what the process is? Do they actually take everything of the truck and search it? I'm mainly interested in knowing that because I'm just curious about how long it will take and how accurate an inventory form should be. For example, if I have a box that is labeled books and dvds, do I have to list the exact number?
I'm really just trying to know if the process is like a few hours of normal waiting and then just present paperwork or a 12 hour process of unpacking, a search, repacking, and then paperwork.

1. No you don't meet the truck at the border. It will either deliver your goods to your home or a bonded warehouse.
2. It is up to CBSA if they decide to search the truck or not.
3. No you don't have to list every item. for example, 12 boxes used clothing with an estimated value, is sufficient. Electronic goods or high value goods should be listed separately with their serial no.

Thanks for all the info. Glad to hear that I won't have to go the border to meet the truck. Other questions, how do the taxes work on items? If I provide a B4 form, is that just fine or if there's an issue do they just charge a certain amount?

1. If the goods are used, then there are no taxes nor duties, unless you include alcohol or tobacco in your shipment over the import limit.
