I'm moving back to Canada once our kid's get out of school In May.....I'm moving to Windsor,Ont it would be closer for my husband to drive back and forth from Canada to the U.S and how hard is it for him to sponsor himself? I have decided to move back to Canada for myself and our children.I have heard that u.s is better then Canada which I have disagree 100% I have lived in u.s for some yrs now and we have struggled regardless if we both have worked well it don't help if min wage is only $7.25 here in Louisiana and the rent is out rages and now the, food, water, garbage etc has increased. Not even talking about the doctors visit nor the dentists bills.Family of 6 we have applied for food stamps but we got denied and the funny thing is we got denied for being over 24 cents and it wasn't something for a long term whats so ever at that time I did lose my job so I'm not gonna settle for something that is less and I know it would be a struggle in the beginning once I do move back but the way I look at it is YES Canada has higher Taxes but if you really look at it better health care better dental care etc where do you think the Taxes go too? Now the u.s the taxes Hmmm where does that go too I can't say but I do know it's not going for people. And I do feel bad for the American's don't get me wrong what's so ever we have tried and tried over and over to make it here in the states. I just don't have no more to give I have seen both sides Canada and the U.S and I would prefer Canada in the long run I would rather pay the Taxes and known where my Taxes are going too instead of working in U.S and not knowing where the taxes are going too.

I'm assuming you're Canadian and your husband is American?

He can't sponsor himself. You have to sponsor him. Start by reading this guide: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/3999Etoc.asp

You cannot be on social assistance to sponsor your husband.

You should look at the rents in Toronto area before you decide it's obviously better in Canada versus the USA. I lived in Georgia and paid $350 for a 1 bedroom apartment with 800 square feet. In Canda, my apartment is 700 square feet and $850 per month. Cell phones are 2-3 times more expensive. Any dairy product is double in price. Minimum wage is only 10-11 dollars in the provinces. It's better than 7.25, but not enough for 2-3x the prices. I could easily buy a home in Georgia making $12/hour and in Canada - that's not a reality.

Thanks and I know in Toronto is very expensive and that's not where I'm moving too and where do you think I would be on social Assistance. So how would we obtain a visa so he can go from Canada to U.S to work or what is it called? He did have issues with Canadian border due that they are #$##$ to Americans and will this solve that issues or will he get hassle still? I just want whats best for my family

Either you sponsor your husband under family class or he applies as a skilled worker if he qualifies. You want to look at Federal Skilled Worker, and Provincial Nominee Program and if he is American, probably NAFTA programs.

While Toronto is more expensive than Windsor, cost of living in Windsor is STILL going to be higher than certainly Louisiana. I assume previous poster mentioned the "no sponsoring while on social assistance" proviso because you posted that you lost your job and applied for food stamps in the US...it's just a heads up, so you're not blindsided. Not sure what you're asking with respect to a visa for your husband. If he continues to live and work in the US and visits you guys in Canada, he should just get a NEXUS card so he can get through the border more quickly. If he wants to live and/or work in Canada, he needs PR status or work permit as previous poster stated.

BTW, dentistry isn't covered by provincial healthcare though you may get it covered through your employer's extended coverage. And OHIP (healthcare in Ontario) takes 3 months to kick in, even for citizens moving back from abroad. (So you'll have to pay for travel insurance for that period or risk it and pay out-of-pocket if anything comes up.)

Travel insurance usually does not cover existing conditions. You might make sure what are covered and what are not before purchasing travel insurance if you decide to do so.

Also, if your kids were born in the US and you haven't done so already, you should look into getting them Canadian citizenship certificates/passports. They'll probably need that to register for school.

They can be that way with most people not just Americans. :P
