Hello, I'm 16 years old and I moved from the US in 2016. I do not have a SIN number but I go to secondary school and I have a father who legally lives here.

I want to know if I am eligible to work, please ask questions to further determine my situation if necessary.

Things to know:
  • I do not possess a SIN
  • My father has resident status here, my mother is still filling out her application forms.

What is your status?

I'm currently on implied status which is simply because they're processing me and my mother's visitor visas
Legally I'm allowed to go to school because my dad is a resident here but I'm wondering if this means I can work too

Unfortunately it's not possible for you to work.

Is your father a Canadian citizen or PR?

Once you have your PR through sponsorship, then you can work.
Well according to my mother she can apply for my SIN once my Visa status is renewed.

Edit: I heard it is possible to work temporarily without a SIN as long as you're in the process of doing so. Does the same apply here?

As said above, once you are a permanent resident, you will be able to work.

Hopefully your father has started that process since it typically takes at least a year.

That doesn't mean you can legally work. In order to work, you would need to have a work permit. There's no way you're going to be able to get a work permit as a 16 year old.

You need to wait until PR before working will be possible.

I have been here for 5 years and it's incredibly difficult to not grow impatient or upset since both of my parents like to talk about how they're "working on it" but I wonder if they are even doing anything right? Please let me know with perhaps tips I can give them to speed up the process.

Your father needs to apply to sponsor you. There is no way to speed up the process. It seems he hasn’t.

Your father needs to submit the application to sponsor you for PR asap. Why hasn't he done that already?

Has he already been a PR for 5 years? When did he get PR status exactly and why weren't you and your mother included in his application?

He used to live in the US but had to move to Canada, he got his PR a while ago, not sure when but it was before I came to Canada to live with him. If that's the case that he hasn't applied for anything then it's very frustrating to say the least. The guy hates doing any sort of paperwork and doesn't even want to talk about. I'm going to move back to the US when I turn 18, my parents had always told me I needed to be in the country at least 5 years before I could apply to be a PR.

Now I've been invited to work and I look forward to it, I had excitedly made my resume and now it just sucks that I can't work or do anything until I am approved. I have no idea how long that will take but at this point I am going to leave this country and join the armed forces in America just because the only *work experience I have will be in construction and that's not something I focus on as a career.

If I serve my country I can be rewarded with tuition

*I worked along side my father in his contracting business and was paid
